Following a bitter and prolonged fight among the officers and directors of the First National Bank of Missoula, Ferdinand Kennett, Gustavus A. Wolf, James H.T. Ryman, Charles Otto, Lucretia Worden, Levi J. Fisk, and August Wierich established the Western Montana National Bank on March 21, 1889. Andrew Hammond had arrived in Montana in 1867, settled in Hell Gate in 1870, then moved to Missoula in late 1871. The Beckwith Mercantile Company was founded in St. Ignatius, Montana, by George Beckwith in 1902. A Canadian, George Beckwith came to St. Ignatius from Missoula in 1902 and bought the general store from Alexander Demers. Charles Herbert McLeod was born in 1859 and came to Missoula, Montana, from New Brunswick, Canada, in 1880 to work for local businessman Andrew Hammond.
